Manchester United had suffered a surprise 2-1 defeat against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day 1966, but The Reds extracted revenge on this occasion, beating The Blades 2-0 at Old Trafford. Scotland international Paddy Crerand scored one his rare goals for Manchester United as the experienced midfield enforcer unleashed an astonishing shot from some thirty yards out past Sheffield United netminder Alan Hodgkinson and into the goal ten minutes ahead of the half-time break. Manchester United ultimately doubled their advantage on the hour mark when David Herd, anothr Scotland player, found the back of the net after receiving a brilliant through pass from World Cup winner Bobby Charlton. John Aston did have the ball in the net later in the second period, but it was ruled out for a foul and the match finished with no further goals.
